National Potato Chip Day is an American holiday celebrated every March 14. It is unknown who created this holiday, but the history of the potato chip is something that many people do not know.
Potato chips were invented when a customer at a restaurant in Saratoga California constantly complained that his potatoes were too thick and soggy. The chef, George Crum, decided to get back at the customer by slicing the potato extremely thin and deep frying them until they were crispy. Then he put a generous amount of salt on them and served them to the complaining customer. To his surprise, the customer loved them and “Saratoga Chips” became a popular item on the menu. National Potato Chip Day is not a well known or widely celebrated holiday, and Hannah Wagar ‘19 thinks it should stay that way. “Who cares about potatoes?” Hannah said. She isn’t planning to celebrate this holiday on her own and doesn’t think that our school should do anything to celebrate either. Despite the lack of enthusiasm for this holiday, it is still celebrated by food enthusiasts across America. Potato chips are America’s favorite snack food and their history should be known.

Shala Sherlock 19’ has been playing softball for 8 years. She takes on whatever the coaches throw at her while she is practicing on the field. Shala plays 1st and 3rd base. “I enjoy the plays at third and the positive energy of getting the runner out at first” she said. “I joined softball because my brother got me interested and my whole family played at the time. I was old enough to play. I tried it and played ever since.”
Shala tries to stay in shape and tries not to eat a lot of junk food and still try to stay active while out of season. “My goal for the season is to try my best and try for some home runs.” “The coaches are looking for good sportsmanship, good footwork, and hard workers” Shala said. What Shala likes most about the team is how the team can be one big family and the positive energy of the team cheering or just the energy in the game when someone makes a good play. Shania Sherlock graduated in 2013. Throughout her high school years, she attended TEC to be a certified nurse aid. She graduated high school and attended SC4 to do the transfer program. She’s now attending University Of Michigan to get her bachelor's degree in psychology. She is currently working for St. Clair county public guardians office as an assistant case worker and a certified nurse aid at Lake Huron medical center.
After she graduates in 2018 she plans on taking her degree and becoming a worker for child protective services. She chose psychology as her major because she loves being able to help people who need it. I asked for some tips she could give high school students. She said “if you don’t know how to apply yourself, don’t start.” The college schedule is much greater than high school but there is so much more work. “My last tip is don’t take 22 credit hours” she said. It’s to much to try and balance it between work and other life events. It took her awhile to actually be set on a major. In 3 years she changed it 3 times till she was officially set on psychology. The biggest difference is the schedule it sounds like you have more free time but you really don’t. Late afternoon at around 4:23 police were fixated upon a black truck that had crashed into a Spanish classroom. From the pictures posted above it is clear that the truck hit a steam vent in which heat is supplied to the rooms for Port Huron Highs classrooms. It is unknown whether or not all steam vents will have to be closed in order to fix the leak. But a crew will be working around the clock to fix the heating and school is expected to resume tomorrow, said by Michael Palmer.
UPDATE 5:26 PM It has now been confirmed by police that the driver was going to pick up his daughter when his brakes gave out when trying to stop. Many people vote in mock elections, but only one can win the title. It’s all based on popular vote and who fits the name best. Most of the time it goes by grade level which sets up the base for people to vote, if you’re a senior you vote for seniors at the senior table, but if you’re a freshman you vote for freshman. It’s not always the popular people that win the titles, it just depends on who gets out and votes. There are many different titles in mocks, some examples include “drama queen”, “party animal”, and “most likely to be famous”. It is highly recommended to get out and vote in mock elections, mostly because it’s important to be involved with your school and your opinion matters too. The titles won will be put into the yearbook on the mocks page and be placed next to the person that won that title. Anybody can win but you just have to get people to go vote. Personally this year I won three titles, the titles I won were “drama queen” (repeat from last year) , “most sarcastic”, and “female best friends” with my best friend Taylor Ostrander. They’re all goofy but I might as well embrace them. Not everyone is happy with the titles they get but they just have to deal with it and go for a different one next year. If you’re wanting to win a specific title you should get your friends out to go vote, it gives you a better chance to win if you have people get involved and vote for you.

On thursday of last week, The Weeknd’s most recent album, Starboy hit the number one spot on the Billboard 200 music chart. It is followed by the soundtrack from the movie Moana and 24K Magic by Bruno Mars. This album made it’s debut in late 2016 and is The Weeknd’s second number one album. (His album from last year entitled Beauty Behind the Madness was his first number one album.) According to Billboard Magazine, Starboy has sold 69,000 equivalent album units, 18,000 of which were from traditional album sales. Paste Magazine has also reported that this album is the third largest debut of 2016 behind Lemonade by Beyoncé and Drake’s album Views at number one. This album hasn’t just sold incredibly well, but it has also broken the record for the most streamed song in a single day on Spotify. Although his album has had a lot of success, his song “Starboy”, which is a collaboration with the french music duo Daft Punk, featured on the album by the same name has dropped to number four on the Billboard hot 100 list. His other collaboration with Daft Punk entitled “I feel it Coming” is at 25 on this list and his solo “Party Monster” is at 49. Number one on this list is “Bad and Boujee” by Migos featuring Lil Uzi Vert. “I think that those placements are good for those songs.” says sophomore Allaena James, a fan of The Weeknd. Even though she thinks that “Starboy” deserves its number four ranking, she still likes this new album. “I think he deserved it on top. It was a good album.” Are you wondering what the top clothing trends are for this cold winter season? Well, here is a list of must have clothing items to have in your closet this chilly time of year. Christmas is a time to spend moments with loved ones, and to make beautiful memories. Many sit around the fireplace while drinking hot chocolate, watch christmas movies, but many also like to go out and adventure the beauty of the snowy nature.
Shay Smith, a senior at Port Huron High School, attended the Wild Lights with her boyfriend, Ryan on a cold December evening. This is the first time she has ever witnessed the lights in person, and she had the opportunity to spend the experience with her beloved flame. When she first saw the lights she was hesitant about the layout. But as Smith began to explore the dreamland she became more mesmerized with the beauty the lights held. The color of the lights were not ordinary, they were colors you wouldn't expect to see in Christmas lights. At first, the expectations weren’t exactly met, but she saw past that and enjoyed the time she had making memories. Smith’s favorite part was seeing all of the animals, although she was disappointed that the penguins were put away, but that did not stop her from taking funny photos with her boyfriend and having fun. She managed to battle the blistering cold by sheltering with five warm jackets. Smith does recommend others to go, to have the experience she did. Go with friends, family or a significant other, make memories and have the time of your life. 1.Shay Smith and her Christmas is a time to spend moments with loved ones, and to make beautiful memories. Caleb made his star with copper wire and other things. Lots of people make Christmas crafts to get them in the holiday spirit. Growing up is already hard enough but growing up knowing who you are and not being able to express it because you feel obligated to live up to the expectations of someone you never were is worse. The reality is, this is how life is for many Transgender individuals. Whether people realize it or not Transgender people do exist and we encounter them more frequently than you'd think. Puberty is already something to be dreaded and for transgender individuals all it is is a reminder that nothing about them is the way it’s supposed to be. Acceptance and tolerance are already big issues within the lgbtq community but it’s an even bigger issue within the Trans* community. Some people have a more accepting and supportive group of people in their live ups while others aren't so lucky. Both perspectives take on a unique role in making people more aware that their identities are valid. 2016 has been the deadliest year for the lgbtq+ community. The deadliest mass shooting since 9/11/01 took place on June 12th of this year at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida Killing 49 members of the lgbtq+ community and injuring 53 others. Since then there have been 15 deaths of Transgender women of color, those deaths have all involved hate crime. In 2014 Transgender teen Leelah Alcorn, age 17 from Ohio committed suicide by walking in front of traffic, in 2015 transgender teen Ash Haffner, Age 16 from North Carolina committed suicide the same way. All of these deaths have one thing in common, they all involve some sort of hate or non acceptance, whether it had been themselves not accepting who they were or someone else. That is definitely a threat to the growing population of lgbt+ youth. Of course there is always going to be narrow minded people that just simply don't want to understand because they don't want to be faced with difference, but they don't realize the struggle transgender people go through everyday. For a lot of transgender people self acceptance has been life long. People who have been out for years still face this along with the constant question of “what if”. So many people struggle with the concept of never really living up to the standards of themselves, they try to push themselves to act or look a certain to be perceived as the person the want to be but feel like they may never reach their goal. All and all, living as something other than “the norm” can be difficult but the people that have struggled through and survived to see things get better make the journey worth it.
