National Seed Day is a celebration of seeds, it is the thought that plants are extremely important to our ecosystem and we should respect and celebrate them for all they have to offer. From vegetables, to fruits, to beautiful flowers, they filter our Co2 and give us oxygen to breathe. Justa Velez was interviewed May 9, 2017 and was asked a few questions. She stated “some of my favorite plants to sell are sunflowers, daffidophiles, and Rutabaga. Sunflowers especially remind her of her late grandmother Jill, who started the tradition to plant ten flower seeds on labor day every year. When asked “why do you love these traditions” she replied “ because spending time with family and helping our environment is more important than spending time on our phones and watching Netflix.” Justa also wanted to add that she thinks everyone should go out and plant a variety of flowers or vegetables because why wouldn’t you want to bring beauty to our world?

The Taurus represents those who have birthdays between April 21 - May 21, people between these dates may be called taureans. Several people use the zodiac signs to help them make decisions or predict what might their personality traits be. On Wednesday, May 10, I interviewed Maddie Brown who in which shares a birthday with this zodiac sign. Usually zodiac signs can determine a certain trait about someone or how they can act or their behavior towards other things. During this interview I Asked Maddie if “she would consider herself a generous and dependable person?” because of it being one of the traits of a taurus. She replied “ I feel like i’m a pretty generous person, I do a lot of things for others, being kind and providing help when needed.” Some people, believe it or not use zodiac signs to determine future relationships with others. Having a certain zodiac sign helps you pair with someone of another sign who shares similar traits and is suppose to be your “perfect match”. When asking Maddie “Would you typically search for a certain person with a certain sign or does it not matter?” she stated “I don't ever search for someone with a certain sign, I just let life lead me to that person and just let it happen.” But in the end she said she enjoys having a April birthday “ That it fits me good and I like having it early in the year, I love it.”
There are many wacky holidays in the month of May but here are a few that stand out. These holidays are mother goose day, save the rhino day, lumpy rug day, bird day, national hoagie day, no diet day, no socks day, clean up your room day, no dirty dishes day and save your hearing day. These are not all wacky but it makes you think why people want them as a holiday rather than just taking their own part into holidays that they make up for themselves. It even makes you wonder how these holidays came about and why they are on the dates that they are. These holidays are on various days throughout the month of May and are celebrated by some.
Mother goose day is on May 1st, it is a day to appreciate nursery rhymes and stories. The term “mother goose” dates back to the 1950’s and this day was founded in 1987 by Gloria T. Delamar. Save the rhinos day is also on the first of May, it is a day set to save the Rhinoceros from going extinct, a day to show the importance of it. Rhons have roamed the Earth for millions of years. People hunt and kill the rhinos for their horns to make knives, statues, and etc. Since animal help groups have stepped in and started helping to stop these occurrences, the rhino population has somewhat regained. Lumpy rug day is on May 3, it is intended to appreciate a good rug. Bird Day is May 4, everyone loves to watch birds, this is a day set to recognize birds. This day was established by bird activists. This day isn’t necessarily weird or wacky, but it is a day celebrated in May. National hoagie day is on May 5, this day is to celebrate a big, tasty hoagie. It is a quick meal and good for on the go. No diet day is May 6, this day is actually an important one, it is to recognize the bodies we have. It is also to encourage to change our bodies only in a healthy way, this day should be celebrated by everyone because it encourages people to love themselves. No socks day is May 8. It is set to let your toes free, to wear sandals or flip flops. May 10 is clean up your room day, parents love this day because they all want kids to clean up their rooms but they must also practice what they preach. No dirty dishes day is May 28, it is to not use your dishwasher, nor wash dishes but rather use disposable plates. cups, and silverware. It is not meant to have dishes waiting to be washed for the next day, there shouldn’t be any dirty dishes. The last one mentioned in this article is save your hearing day, this day is set to remember the importance of your hearing and to help preserve it such as staying away from loud noises. Jayvon Moncrief at Port Huron High School was interviewed for this article, when asked if he knew of any weird May holidays, he claimed that Mother’s Day is weird because he believes that you should love your mom everyday. He was also asked if he thought that monthly holidays are cool to have, he answered “I guess, they don’t really affect people. He was also asked if he has ever heard about lumpy rug day, oyster day, no diet day, no socks day, or clean up your room day? He has heard about clean up your room day. The holiday that sounds most interesting to him from those choices is oyster day. When asked if he would ever participate in any of these and he said “if I knew what they were then maybe.” He was asked if he participates in any weird holidays and he said that he participates in April Fool’s Day but mainly everyone does. The only traditions he has for May is worrying about what he’s going to get his mom for Mother’s Day and her birthday. If any holiday could be added to the Month of May, he said that “Skittles Day” should be added, a day to celebrate Skittles. There are many wacky holidays for all months but this article was specifically for the month of May. There are many weird holidays in May like mentioned but there are also so many more. Every month has crazy, wacky holidays that some people choose to participate in. Have some fun, join in on the wacky adventures! Mother’s Day is May 14th this year. Many families will be going out to eat or going shopping, or any other activity they traditionally do for Mother’s Day. Alexis Briggins ’19 and Jillian Carrier ‘19 both plan to celebrate Mother’s Day by going out to eat. Many families celebrate Mother’s Day with not only their mother’s but with their grandma’s, aunt’s, and or anyone who has had any sort of motherly role in their lives. Peyton Grygorcewicz ‘19 will be relaxing and watching movies with her mother this weekend, along with making her breakfast in bed. Mother’s Day is all about recognizing a mother’s hard work and celebrating them all day long, which is what they truly deserve!
