Christmas is a time to spend moments with loved ones, and to make beautiful memories. Many sit around the fireplace while drinking hot chocolate, watch christmas movies, but many also like to go out and adventure the beauty of the snowy nature.
Shay Smith, a senior at Port Huron High School, attended the Wild Lights with her boyfriend, Ryan on a cold December evening. This is the first time she has ever witnessed the lights in person, and she had the opportunity to spend the experience with her beloved flame. When she first saw the lights she was hesitant about the layout. But as Smith began to explore the dreamland she became more mesmerized with the beauty the lights held. The color of the lights were not ordinary, they were colors you wouldn't expect to see in Christmas lights. At first, the expectations weren’t exactly met, but she saw past that and enjoyed the time she had making memories. Smith’s favorite part was seeing all of the animals, although she was disappointed that the penguins were put away, but that did not stop her from taking funny photos with her boyfriend and having fun. She managed to battle the blistering cold by sheltering with five warm jackets. Smith does recommend others to go, to have the experience she did. Go with friends, family or a significant other, make memories and have the time of your life. 1.Shay Smith and her Christmas is a time to spend moments with loved ones, and to make beautiful memories. Many people have a lot of homemade decorations in their house and enjoy giving them out. A lot of DIY Christmas ideas are homemade wreaths, ornaments, stars, and even bows. Caleb made his star with copper wire and other things. Lots of people make Christmas crafts to get them in the holiday spirit. This Christmas, try to make someone something, and see how much fun it is!
Growing up is already hard enough but growing up knowing who you are and not being able to express it because you feel obligated to live up to the expectations of someone you never were is worse. The reality is, this is how life is for many Transgender individuals. Whether people realize it or not Transgender people do exist and we encounter them more frequently than you'd think. Puberty is already something to be dreaded and for transgender individuals all it is is a reminder that nothing about them is the way it’s supposed to be. Acceptance and tolerance are already big issues within the lgbtq community but it’s an even bigger issue within the Trans* community. Some people have a more accepting and supportive group of people in their live ups while others aren't so lucky. Both perspectives take on a unique role in making people more aware that their identities are valid. 2016 has been the deadliest year for the lgbtq+ community. The deadliest mass shooting since 9/11/01 took place on June 12th of this year at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida Killing 49 members of the lgbtq+ community and injuring 53 others. Since then there have been 15 deaths of Transgender women of color, those deaths have all involved hate crime. In 2014 Transgender teen Leelah Alcorn, age 17 from Ohio committed suicide by walking in front of traffic, in 2015 transgender teen Ash Haffner, Age 16 from North Carolina committed suicide the same way. All of these deaths have one thing in common, they all involve some sort of hate or non acceptance, whether it had been themselves not accepting who they were or someone else. That is definitely a threat to the growing population of lgbt+ youth. Of course there is always going to be narrow minded people that just simply don't want to understand because they don't want to be faced with difference, but they don't realize the struggle transgender people go through everyday. For a lot of transgender people self acceptance has been life long. People who have been out for years still face this along with the constant question of “what if”. So many people struggle with the concept of never really living up to the standards of themselves, they try to push themselves to act or look a certain to be perceived as the person the want to be but feel like they may never reach their goal. All and all, living as something other than “the norm” can be difficult but the people that have struggled through and survived to see things get better make the journey worth it.
Would you like a larger variety of lunch at school? Are you tired of not getting the meal that you want because it’s already by your lunch period? As it turns out, you are not alone.
Tyler Minnie ‘17 would prefer more mexican food for school lunches. He thinks there should be more than milk to drink. He would like to see more drink choices like pop, energy drinks and juices. “They should add an extra drink because the one we get are to small and that we should get bigger lunches” he says. I asked him what lunch he would rather have. “ I would pick A lunch because all the good food is gone by the time we get to the other lunches.” I also asked him if there was open campus would he go and get his own food “Yes because it adds more variety to what you are eating for lunch.” Most will agree that the lunch that our school serves can be improved. Students want more options. |
