On the morning of the Port Huron High and Port Huron Northern game, the usual blue and yellow of the Northern rock had been painted over with the colors of our school and a Trump/Pence campaign sign was placed beside it. The rock is painted every year before the rivalry game, with the exception of last year, but this year it got a lot more attention than usual. So why is the rock so important to Northern anyways? According to Nicholas Whitley, a sophomore at PHN, “The seniors paint it, so it’s like a tribute.” To Northern, the rock is like the PHHS wall for the seniors. It’s a part of their tradition. “It’s repainted,” he said “but I thought it was pretty.” At first, a lot of people were infuriated. Students took to social media to rant about the vandalism. Some PHHS students defended them as well, but after a few hours most of the students had found humor in it. “They thought it was funny,” says Whitley. Students from Northern High School and Port Huron High School even posted memes and pictures about the rock on social media. During the game, the marching band yelled out rock themed chants like “Rocks” (a parody of the song “Shots” by ‘Lil Jon,) a new form of a classic chant “Who’s Rock is This? Our Rock!” and a Tribe member proudly held a sign stating “We will ROCK you!” Northern’s anger may have gotten the better of them in the long run, because PHHS won the game 23-3.

Float Building is a big part of Port Huron High’s Homecoming. Each grade competes to build a float. The junior’s theme for their float is Halloween. With Mrs.Tatti taking on the responsibility of being the junior class adviser because of how much she loves the grade level due to the fact that she had many of them in their 8th grade year as an ELA teacher, there is a strong belief that they could win this year’s competition. Tatti thinks having class pride, teamwork, and fun is the best way to complete their float. Although she has set her goals for her class, she mainly tries to stand back, observe, and help them work together. She claims that the junior’s float is different from the other grades for one reason only, theirs was “built with love.”
Mrs.Tatti explains that she doesn't have to motivate them since there already are self motivated by the will to defeat the other grades. They plan to have people shout “That's the best float i've ever seen’ when there float is showed in the homecoming parade. They know they must work very hard to beat the other classes and they must have the willpower to do it. The recently loved video game for Android and IOS devices that came out July 6th 2016 by Niantic has recently seen falls from its players. This easy to play game uses the technology of GPS tracking to follow a trainer around the area that the player walks.
The decline in use of Pokémon go might be due to the fact that there's no real objective to beat besides “catching em’ all” (which is over 140 types) which is very unrealistic due to each region can holding so many types of Pokémon due to its geographical location, and another factor; time of day plays a role in catching the creatures. A recent interview of Marissa ‘18 at PHHS gives an inside look on what her views are about the recent fad in mobile gaming apps. Asked on what she thought of the game she stated “It was fun at first but then it got boring after about two weeks. Asked if she thinks the game is dead she said “yeah, probably because it has nothing exciting to do”. After being asked why she thinks it has died out she replied “ Probably because people are too lazy to walk around to beat a game with no reward”. So to put it blighty Pokèmon Go will probably never arise again from the trash bin of lost games because of its gameplay and style of play. Alana Sims '19 and Allaena James '19 match outfit and pose for T'wiching Tuesday.
As she walks down, the hall most people stop and stare at the one, the only, Alana Sims ‘19, the queen of spirit week. She participates because she “loves taking pride in her school.” She is deemed the queen not only because she participates everyday each year of every spirit week that the school hosts, but she tries her best to go above and beyond with her attire. If she were in charge of spirit week, she said she wouldn’t change a thing other than letting people know more in advance. In the future, she would like to see there be a safari theme for next year. It does upset her how a lot of people don’t participate in spirit week, because she thinks that they should take pride in Port Huron High! |
