Joseph Myers is a captain on the Port Huron Big Red tennis team. Leadership plays a big role in his image. Myers has played tennis for three years and continues to grow each year he plays. His accomplishments in high school tennis have led to him being recruited by numerous colleges. When asked what is the key to winning having a mental aspect of knowing what you're going to do on your next shot, being well conditioned., and footwork is important. Myers is very competitive on the court. To prepare for a match, Myers reads books on how to control his mind to keep him calm, and he works out. He also practices on shadow ground strokes and hops up and down to get blood flowing. So far this season Myers has excelled at a high level to start off the season at a 3- 1 record. With a start like that he is on pace to reach states again for the second year consecutively.

Isaac Bonner ’19 is on his second year on the cross country team. He believes that cross country is not only a sport but a community where every team pushes each other to do their best. “It’s not as much as competing with other schools it’s more about competing with ourselves to beat our personal records and continue to get better at what we do.” However it is still extremely competitive sport. When asked what motivates him to run he replied that he wants to beat his sister. While all of his family runs he still believes that it is more of a friendly competition between all of his siblings. He even stated “No one expects us to beat Rachel.” even as this is what motivates him to continue running each day and to continue to strive to make themselves better they know that it isn’t expected but they want to get better and become as good as she was.
It’s officially football season, and for many this is very exciting time of year. This time of the year is especially important if you’re apart of any football team. Reese Mathews is a sophomore and plays on Port Huron High School’s JV football team. Thursday after school he had a lot to say about his experience and this year’s season before the JV game that day.
At age 10, Reese was inspired to start playing, because he thought that it looked fun and his dad used to play as well. He plays guard, defensive tackle, snapper, and enjoys all of these positions. Playing football takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Reese stated that this is one of the hardest parts, “Practices are hard because they’re long and really hot,” he said. When it comes to the best part of football he says he really enjoys winning a game and seeing all his hard work pay off. When asked about how this year’s season is going, he responded with “So far it’s not too bad, but we are going to get better.” This year’s season has been very exciting for the fans and the players. With a few JV games left, only time will tell how the rest of the season will go. |
