Coping With Exams
During the stress of exam preparation and the exams themselves students take to many different routes to survive this strenuous portion of highschool life. As much as students wish away exams they are a fact that must be faced. From how they study to how they eat students hold many unique methods of overcoming this obstacle. A poll on a group of 40 students says that around 70% of students prefer to study alone, those who don’t study alone have said they typically only study in groups for particular classes. A common subject for group studying is math as many kids struggle with this topic and by combining brain power students get through the formulas. The poll also showed that around 5% of students don’t study at all. When further investigated these students were found to most likely be so well versed in the subject that additional preparation is of no benefit, or for some the extra studying makes them too anxious and therefore is not helpful. The true uniqueness is found in students ways of handling exams emotionally. The students of the poll were also asked about diet, sleep, and abnormal behavior in regards to exam week. The most common coping mechanism found was binge eating and using music as an escape. Two distinct groups were found, those who block out the thought of exams and those who stress themselves to an extreme. Those who block out exams have fairly similar habits of sleeping away the thoughts and listening to music. Those who stress themselves come up with strange thoughts and methods in hope for anyway not to fail. Over-stressors can be found pulling all nighters and dragging themselves to school ragged with caffeinated drinks. When over-stressors were asked about the thoughts the following were some of what goes through their mind as possible preparation. (Said in a stressful joking manner.) The osmosis theory- “I soak text books and put it to my head and hope through diffusion it’ll transfer.” Crying - “If i sit in the corner and cry enough the universe may pity me enough to change my fate of failure.” Sacrifice- “I go to the fields and find a sheep with fur as white as snow and sacrifice it to the dark tri-dimensional overlord Grablezook.” Food- “Ice cream, buckets and buckets of it, and maybe a pizza too.”
